Introduction

For swappers to work in New Zealand there are two main options. Apply for a temporary work visa or applying for a working holiday visa. Both are flexible and provide good options for swappers

Temporary Work Visa

Are you eligible

If you are aged 18 to 30, you may be able to apply for a visa or permit through the Young Persons Working Holiday Scheme. You may also be eligible for a temporary work visa and/or permit if:

  • you have a job offer from a New Zealand employer
  • there is a specific purpose or event for which you need to come to New Zealand to work
  • you are a student or trainee who wants to work there, or you want to join your partner and work.

Main conditions

Application process

You must be of an acceptable standard of Health & Character, and satisfy an Immigration Officer that you genuinely intend a temporary stay in New Zealand to work.

You may apply for a temporary work visa either off-shore if an offer of employment is available before you leave your home country, or alternatively on-shore if you source an offer of employment once you arrive in New Zealand.

What it entitles you to: To experience life in New Zealand whilst being able to take up temporary employment during your stay.

Are you eligible

If you are aged 18 to 30, you may be able to apply for a visa or permit through the Young Persons Working Holiday Scheme. You must hold a valid passport for an eligible country and have not been approved for a visa or permit under a New Zealand Working Holiday Scheme before. If you are applying from the UK, you must

  • usually be permanently living in the United Kingdom – this means you can be temporarily visiting another country when you lodge your application
  • have a British passport that‘s valid for at least three months after your planned departure from New Zealand
  • be at least 18 and not more than 30 years old
  • hold a return ticket, or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket**
  • have a minimum of NZ$350 per month of stay available funds to meet your living costs while you’re here
  • meet our health and character requirements
  • be coming to New Zealand to holiday, with work being a secondary intention for your visit not have been approved a visa or permit under a Working Holiday Scheme before.

The length of time you can remain with one employer depends on the country scheme through which you are applying

Main conditions

When in NZ you must not:

  • take up permanent employment (unless you apply for and are granted an ordinary Work Permit while you’re here)
  • work for a period exceeding 12 months
  • enroll in one training or study course of up to three months duration during your visit.
